The annual WINGS luncheon was held last week at the Hyatt Regency benefitting New Friends New Life. Former First Lady Barbara Bush taped a message for the luncheon to welcome everyone and lend support for her grand-daughter, Barbara Pierce Bush, who was the events featured speaker.
Babs Jr. laughed that she hadn't been aware of the taped message but was so grateful because "you don't how how many times I've gotten up to speak at an event and looked out onto a crowd of shocked faces who were clearly expecting the older Barbara Bush".
Barbara Pierce Bush is CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, an organization that mobilizes a global community of emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. Since 2009, Global Health Corps has placed 216 fellows from twelve countries to work with non-profit and government health organizations like Partners In Health and the Clinton Health Access Initiative in Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Rwanda, Zambia and the United States.

Event Chairman Gina Betts and Honorary Chairmen Lana Andrews & Natalie McGuire were joined by the likes of Nancy Gopez, Tanya Foster, Jill Tananbaum, Cindy Stager, Olivia Kearney, Dr. Melissa Tonan Minnick and Karen Jones in learning more about New Friends New Life, who's mission it is to aid sexually exploited women and children by way of education, job training, and financial assistance. Guests were also delighted to see former First Lady Laura Bush in the crowd, who showed up to support her daughter.
These things are always so serious about the mission and the cause and their efforts... so I had to laugh when Babs Jr. incorrectly identified the charity about 5 times throughout her speech calling them New Friends New Hope... and then New Friends New Vision... It just made her all the more endearing and charming. Even though I'm sure New Friends New Life's Executive Director Katie Pedigo was cringing every time she misspoke. I'm guessing they were all so thrilled the Bush's were there they didn't care. To learn more about NFNL, visit http://www.newfriendsnewlife.org.
