You probably know of him from his hit show on Discovery called Fast 'n Loud. The show revolves around the Gas Monkey Garage, where Rawlings and his partner, Aaron Kaufman, are always on the hunt for an old car they can remodel to hot-rod perfection.
I was invited to a media lunch at Rawlings newest venture Gas Monkey Bar & Grill - a 10,000 sq. foot behemoth of a place located off of I-35 and NW Hwy. Why a restaurant? Rawlings told me, "What does a guy who likes to work on cars like to do when he's off duty? Watch sports on TV, drink beer and chase girls. What better place to do that than in your own restaurant!"
They have taken over the old FireWater space and added on some outdoor seating and staging. Chef David Hollister has given the menu a Southern comfort food feel to it with things like Smoked Brisket, 3-Cheese Truffled Mac, Fried Green Beans (not batter fried but stir fried) and kids will go crazy over the Grilled Banana Split. Everything I sampled was phenomenal and I am looking forward to bringing my boys back.
General Manager Alex Mendonsa says that eventually, they plan to have live music 7 nights a week. For now, you'll catch great local bands on the weekends. They also plan on showcasing national and regional acts from time to time. The Old 97's will perform this Saturday, September 21 (9pm) and Hank III will take the stage on October 3.
The interior is made up of reclaimed wood and metal features giving it a cool, modern industrial vibe. Men, you be thrilled to read that there are like a hundred TVs and all of the games can be viewed from pretty much any seat in the house.
Gas Monkey Bar & Grill is located at 10261 Technology Dr., Dallas, TX 75220.
