Cameron Silver has "Decades" of work in vintage fashion

Cameron Silver has "Decades" of work in vintage fashion

At first glance, the fashionable men and women gathered at the NYLO Hotel's South Side location looked much like any other group of stylish 'see and be seen' party goers out on the town last Thursday night. But, upon closer inspection, it soon became clear that the tall, sandy-haired gentleman clad in silk camouflage Valentino pajamas with embroidered black slippers was, indeed, the reason for the gathering. Named one of Time magazine's "25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion" in 2002, Cameron Silver is the founder and co-owner of Decades, the renowned vintage and haute consignment retailer in Los Angeles, and author of a book by the same name, an oversized, visually stunning exploration of a century of fashion. The former co-star of Bravo TV's Dukes of Melrose briefly addressed the group to share his incredible knowledge of vintage fashion before sitting down to sign copies of his latest book and chat with fans.

He said some of the best-dressed, style-savvy men and women in the country live in Dallas, which is a huge compliment considering the caliber of tastemakers on his client list - Julianne Moore, Selma Blair, Charlize Therone, and celebrity-stylist-turned-designer, Rachel Zoe, to name a few.

Every one and every closet has a story to tell, and if you want to learn about them, Cameron Silver is someone you want to know. Together with Decades co-owner, Christos Garkinos, Silver combs the closets of style icons throughout the world to ensure the store is filled with one-of-a kind pieces.

In fact, he told me about a recent visit with Academy Award Winning model-turned-actress Angelica Houston during which he not only gathered some stunning Halston and J. Mendel pieces, but learned "the story behind the clothes" - where Houston wore each piece and what she doing at the time. The history behind the garments, Silver claims, is one of the reasons he is intrigued by vintage pieces, which is why he especially enjoys spending time with their original owners. In addition to their history, 'finding the right dress for a woman, a dress no one else has, and making her feel good about herself' is the most rewarding part of his career attests the gentleman with a seemingly-never-ending knowledge of fashion. It's easy to see why even those who had spent a long afternoon at the Mad Hatters luncheon earlier that day, gathered a second wind in order to visit with renowned vintage expert, Cameron Silver.
