Dallas Summer Musicals presents The Bridges of Madison County
by Shamequia Cason-Callahan
When you think of “The Arts” what comes to mind? The definition of art has been widely debated for some time, so it is only fitting that I impose my statement of what I see “The Arts” to be. Art is any and everything that appeals to our 5 senses: sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell. It is specific to all forms of creativity; from music, to fashion, architecture, interior design, event planning, makeup artistry... I could go on and on. Art is infinite and also in the eye of the beholder. Simply, the very existence of “you” is a work of art. An excellent way to experience the "art" of musical theater is by attending a Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM) performance. DSM is the preeminent nonprofit presenter of Broadway theatre in North Texas. They produce, present and promote excellence in live musical theatre with year-round performances for diverse audiences of all ages, impacting the lives of children and families through community outreach and education and enriching the cultural landscape of Dallas/Fort Worth, North Texas and the Southwest Region.
My reasons for interest in the Dallas Summer Musicals are plentiful. The experience allows cultivation, it permits a night on the town, “another reason to dress-up,” meeting new people, enjoying a great production and actually learning something from the one element that is the piece of entertainment. You can experience the beauty and magic of a DSM performance by attending The Bridges of Madison County on stage February 2-14, 2016. One of the most romantic stories ever written, is now an irresistible, two-time Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical. Based on the best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, The Bridges of Madison County tells the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, four-day whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid. It’s an unforgettable story of two people caught between decision and desire, as a chance encounter becomes a second chance at so much more. This stunning new production features gorgeous, soulful music by Tony Award®-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) that draws upon the rich textures of Americana and folk and the sweeping, expressive balladry of classic Broadway. The Daily News hails it as “one of Broadway’s best scores in the last decade.”
Allow the DSM to be your new get-away. Perfect for kids and in my opinion one of the elements to building well-rounded individuals that have a special place for the arts. Food is key before attending a 2 hour and 40-minute show; therefore, I have plans of feasting on the pre-show buffet with M Dining and with a great seasonal sponsor like Original Cupcakery. Upcoming performances include Million Dollar Quartet, The Little Mermaid, Wicked and Ragtime. Something for everyone! Hopefully, I will see you there!
